چکیده

The discovery of Jupiter–like planets with high eccentricities raises the question of how these eccentricities are produced. We propose that eccentric giant planets (EGPs) could be formed in open star clusters as a result of purely dynami-cal processes. It is found that at least 3% of the giant planets around stars in open clusters can develop high eccentricities due to multi-body gravitational interactions; this percentage increases to 20% if considering only G-dwarf stars. The formation mechanism implies complex dynamical interactions inside ret-rograde hierarchical configurations within the cluster core. The percentage of planetary systems leaving open star clusters without changes in their original dynamical properties can be very large, almost 90%.

The Stability and Prospects of the Detection of Terrestrial/habitable Planets in Multiplanet and Multiple Star Systems

Given the tendency of planets to form in multiples, and the observational evidence in support of the existence of potential planet-hosting stars in binaries or clusters, it is expected that extrasolar terrestrial planes are more likely to be found in multiple body systems. This paper discusses the prospects of the detection of terrestrial/habitable planets in multibody systems by presenting the...

Extreme Habitability: Formation of Habitable Planets in Systems with Close-in Giant Planets and/or Stellar Companions

With more than 260 extrasolar planetary systems discovered todate, the search for habitable planets has found new grounds. Unlike our solar system, the stars of many of these planets are hosts to eccentric or close-in giant bodies. Several of these stars are also members of moderately close (<40 AU) binary or multi-star systems. The formation of terrestrial objects in these ”extreme” environmen...

Planets in open clusters detectable by Kepler

While hundreds of planets have been discovered around field stars, only a few are known in star clusters. To explain the lack of short-period giant planets in globular clusters (GCs), such as 47 Tucane and ω Centauri, it has been suggested that their low metallicities may have prevented planet formation. Alternatively, the high rates of close stellar encounters in these clusters may have influe...

The Modification of Planetary Orbits in Dense Open Clusters

We show that Jovian planets will frequently experience orbital disruption due to interactions with binary stars in their birth clusters. We attack the problem using a Monte Carlo approach and estimate the effective cross section for severe orbital disruption: . Combining the numerically determined cross section with 2 AjS 5 (230 AU) typical cluster densities and velocity dispersions v, we find ...

Suppression of giant planet formation in stellar clusters

Photoevaporation driven by the ultraviolet radiation from massive stars severely limits the lifetime of protoplanetary discs around stars formed within stellar clusters. I investigate the resulting influence of clustered environments on the probability of giant planet formation, and show that for clusters as rich, or richer than, Orion, the time available for planet formation is likely to be li...
